Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai

Swadheshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai was one who fearlessly questioned the corruption,neoptism and autocracy in Travancore through his paper 'Swadeshabhimani' he was deported from the princely state and he died in British Malabar at the age of 38.

Though the editorials and articles in Swadeshabhimani, Ramakrishna pillai severly criticized the corruption that existed in palace circles.He strongly opposed the unconventional actions of Dewan P.Rajagopalachari.Pillai was strongly against the way of Diwans's Suppression of the Chalai Riot of Merchants,with the help of military.In his opinion the Dewan should not have characterized it as a serious riot.
Ramakrishna pillai was also a prominent writer in malayalam.His book on journalism 'Vrithanthapathrapravarthanam' was first of its kind in the language."Ene Nadukadathil' was an autobiographical book on his deportation.His book on Karl Marx and Mohandas Gandhi in Malayalam were the first biographies of these great men in the language.His literary criticisms and book reviews were remarkable.

While he was there the Malayasian Malayalees honoured him with the title ‘Swadeshabhimani’ in 1912.Because of his hardwork and mental tension Ramakrishna Pillai’s health deteriorated.He went kannur for treatment.However he died on 28th March 1916.His body was cremated at the beachthere.His bust was unveiled by 1957 by Indian president Dr.Rajendra Prasad at Trivandrum,Facing the place where the editor has published Swadeshabhimani at one time.
